Fall in Upstate NY is the perfect time to capture some photos with your favorite local photographer. Not only does the natural backdrop provide so many beautiful options for photoshoot locations, but the colors and textures are what make it feel so magical in my opinion. Now that you’ve got your photo shoot schedule, it’s on to deciding what to wear for your fall photoshoot and my honest recommendation is simple: coordinate rather than perfect matching.
When it comes to colors, embrace fall colors without going too overboard. This time of year those beautiful neutrals, mustard, olive, cream, burgundy, camel, ruse and dusty or muted blues pair so well with the foliage. Picking 2-4 colors that complement each other allows the group to choose pieces that feel authentic for themselves while having a cohesive color palette.
My next recommendations go hand in hand, which is to add texture and layers. Not only are cardigans, sweaters, scarves or vests great ways to add visual interest, they are also sometimes necessary to provide options for temperature fluctuations. Textured fabrics and chunky knits also photograph beautifully against the foliage and add a cozy feel too.
I’d also recommend avoiding logos or distracting patterns so it doesn’t pull away fro the people in the photo. Last but not least, don’t forget the shoes. Fall boots, loafers, clean or leather sneakers generally photograph better than athletic shoes unless it’s intentional for the vibe of the photoshoot.
If you’re not sure where to start, choose one person’s outfit first (often the person who has the most specific wardrobe) and coordinate everyone else’s outfits around those colors. And if you can, bring a backup option. If you’re not sure, an extra outfit or accessory can offer you a different look and your photographer can help give you recommendations on what may look best.
