One of the most often asked questions I get asked when discussing branding packages with small businesses is, should I update my headshot? It’s not always a yes, but there are a few signs. If clients and customers would have trouble recognizing you from your profile photo, that’s probably the biggest sign it’s time for an update.
Another reason to update your headshot is if you’ve changed roles, changed industries, started a business or made a pivotal career move. That’s because your headshot should be reflective of where you are now, not where you started. Or if your personal brand has been updated, it may be a good time to get a photo session scheduled to help everything feel cohesive.
It’s usually recommended to update your headshot if the photo was cropped from another picture or taken casually. While there are beautiful selfies and vacation backdrops, they may not communicate the professionalism you want potential clients or customers to see. Another step towards professionalism, it’s helpful to have a consistent headshot across platforms too which may be another reason to update.
There are these logistical reasons to get updated headshots, but it’s completely valid to want an updated headshot to feel more like you. Maybe your current photo feels overly posed or stiff, or maybe it just doesn’t capture your personality. A professional session can help you create images that feel both authentic to you and your brand while also feeling polished.
